College Sports Allegiances

I grew up in Kansas, land of tornadoes, wheat fields and KU Jayhawks basketball. Many of the people I knew either attended college at the University of Kansas or Kansas State University, largely dependent upon their chosen major. I made a decision early in life that I would be a KU basketball fan and a K-state football fan. Since I did not attend either of these universities, I have no alumnus allegiance so I do not think it odd to switch based upon the sports season. I attended DeVry and Keller Graduate School of Management, neither of which have sports teams.

Now that we have moved to our adopted home, I had to decide which college team(s) to follow to assimilate into the culture. I decided upon the University of Utah. I live in the SLC metro area and am not Mormon so I was not really interested in following BYU (Brigham Young University). I am still a K-State fan and have watched a few of this year's games on ESPN and ROOT. I will also watch as many KU basketball games as possible. As many times as we have moved around the country, I can normally watch KU games, even if I have to wait until March Madness.

The main store for Ute gear is Utah Red Zone Store, which has locations in Sandy, Union, Layton and Main Campus. It is different from The Kansas Sampler in that it only has sports gear and no State of Utah merchandise. I purchased a T-shirt and sweatshirt to get started on my collection of gear.

I have really enjoyed watching the Ute games and learning about the football team. It has been an interesting season and I look forward to many more.
